Conventions of Music Videos

Stan - Eminem feat. Dido

Narrative – What is the story of the music video, characters, settings, conflicts, resolutions?
A guy who is a huge fan of Eminem has a girlfriend who is pregnant but he cares more about Eminem than his girlfriend. The story is about the main guy (who is called Stan), writing a lot of letters to Eminem but doesn’t get any replies. He eventually goes mad and has a breakdown, he takes his girlfriend in the car with him and does his last ever rap to Eminem, he doesn’t look where he is going and drives off a bridge.
Camera Shots – What shots are used and why?
A lot of transitions were used in this video. Dissolve was the main effect used as it is probably the most dramatic effect to use that fits the song. At the end of the song it gets pretty intense and a lot of quick cuts are used to build suspension to the big finish of the car driving off the bridge.
Mise-en-scene (What colours, sets and props are used? Why?)
The video is very dark and a lot of dark colours are used to go with the dark song that it is. Throughout the whole video it is shot in low key lighting.
Target Audience – Who is the music video for?
The target audience for this would around 16-21 years old because that is the age group that listen to Eminem.
Editing – Describe the different editing choices made?
A flashback is used in the video to show how big a fan of Eminem Stan is.
Music Video style – What style is used and why?
This is a narrative based video. He uses this because most of Eminem’s are narrative based. I think it works very well because the lyrics are a true story and it is quite an interesting watch.

Miami to Ibiza - Swedish House Mafia feat. Tinie Tempah

Narrative – What is the story of the music video, characters, settings, conflicts, resolutions?
This is story about someone who obviously has a lot of money and has a crazy weekend with what we presume to be his girlfriend. It is based in two main locations (Miami and Ibiza) with lots of other settings within them like a huge nightclub and hotel rooms. All the settings are places where a lot of money is needed to experience them. For example one of the scenes is set on a private yacht, another on a private jet. Somewhere in the middle of the video, he has a bit of an argument with his girlfriend in a club for looking at some of the others girls in the club and then eventually ends up in a hotel room with a different girl to one we see at the start.
Camera Shots – What shots are used and why?
It is all shot with a handheld camera and is all a POV shot as we never see what the main character looks like we can only see what he sees so it feels like the audience is experiencing what he is experiencing. A lot of close ups are used as well, mainly on the females in the video to draw the viewer to the mild nudity and to make the women seem more desirable and to give more viewing to the main selling point of the video.
Mise-en-scene (What colours, sets and props are used? Why?)
It is all shot in black and white to emphasise the handheld camera technique. There are some obvious props like the private jet and private yacht but there are a lot of props used that you would associate with this type of music like the champagne, disco balls and the big DJ decks.
Target Audience – Who is the music video for?
The target audience for this music video would probably be late teens so about 16 years old to mid – twenties so around 25 as they will most likely listen to this particular genre of music.
Editing – Describe the different editing choices made?
Throughout the video there are a lot of quick cuts. This goes with the tempo of the music and to make it look like there is a lot of action going on. This could also make the viewer watch the video more than once because it happens so fast you could miss a few shots and need to watch it again.
Music Video style – What style is used and why?
This is a concept based video as the lyrics don’t go with the video. It is just a video to show what someone’s life is like if you have a lot of money. This makes the male viewers look up to him and be like him so they can have the crazy lifestyle.

Country Girl - Primal Scream
Narrative – What is the story of the music video, characters, settings, conflicts, resolutions?
This is story about a good looking blonde girl who by the looks of has had a rough time as she has cuts on her wrist where she would have self-harmed and all over her hands. She goes and stays in a rundown 1 star motel for the weekend. She goes and gets ready for a night out. However she doesn’t do it normally, she keeps downing drinks to make her drunk and eats some meat that hasn’t been cooked properly. She ends up going to a lot of bars and causing havoc like hitting people with snooker cues and smashes people over the head with a glass and tips up a table. The video ends with her being kicked out of a club then walking back to her motel.
Camera Shots – What shots are used and why?
There are a lot of close ups used in the video. Nearly all of the close ups are of the girl’s different body parts. These close ups vary in body parts though. Some of them show all her cuts and bruises where she has self-harmed or been abused to make the viewer have sympathy for the girl. The other close ups are of a sexual nature like showing her cleavage and bum a lot to make the viewer think she is more desirable and a sex symbol.  Towards the end of the video, they make the camera sway about a bit to show that she is drunk and it makes the viewer feel the same way she is.
Mise-en-scene (What colours, sets and props are used? Why?)
The colours in the video are quite bright colours to match the song. The main props used are snooker cues and glasses that she uses as weapons. It is set in a place with a lot of other cowboys/country people so I would guess Texas to fit the song title.
Target Audience – Who is the music video for?
I would say this music video is for ages 15+ as the video isn’t really suitable for children younger than that and an older age range would listen to this music.
Editing – Describe the different editing choices made?
There are a lot of quick cuts between the story and the main singer of Primal Scream. Towards the end of the video, the cuts get quicker as it makes the viewer seem like they don’t know what's going on a bit like how the girl will be feeling because of all the drink she has had.
Music Video style – What style is used and why?
This is part performance, part concept. It cuts to the main singer of Primal Scream a lot singing the song so that is the performance element. The story has nothing to do with the song or lyrics so that makes it concept based.

Music Video Techniques

Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin identified 5 key aspects of music videos that the audience need to look out for.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

Goodwin realised that with certain genres of music came certain types of music videos, for example rock/metal groups usually have a performance video in an unusual location and girl/boy bands also often have performance videos but usually with a dance routine. The two videos I have used back this theory up.

Little Mix - Wings

The Wombats - Jump into the Fog

A relationship between the lyrics and visuals

This is when the visuals and lyrics in a music video are similar, there is no real story line just visuals that are often created in special effects that are the same as the lyrics being used. It can also emphasis the lyrics used. This happens a lot in Hip-Hop/R&B music videos. This happens a lot in the examples I have used.

I Can Transform Ya - Chris Brown (feat. Lil Wayne)

Good Life - Kanye West (feat. T-Pain)

Multiple Close ups of Artist or Main Vocalist

A lot of music videos have close ups of the main singer, this makes the audience feel it is aimed at them directly. This is used with women artist more than male artists and it makes them more desirable.

What Do You Take me For - Pixie Lott (feat. Pusha T)

Fix You - Coldplay

Fast Editing

Some music videos use fast edits and a lot of quick cuts to make the viewers watch the video more than once so they understand what is going. These are mostly used in songs with a similar fast paced tempo.

Miami to Ibiza - Swedish House Mafia (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Can You Hear Me - Wiley (feat. Ms. D, Skepta and JME)

Digital Effects
Sometimes music videos use special effects or CGI to make an enjoyable and memorable music video that viewers would be willing to watch a multiple of times.

ET - Katy Perry (feat. Kanye West)

Earthquake - Labrinth (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Intertextuality
Intertextuality is used to make the audience feel a sense of achievement and fulfillment as they can point out features that they recognise in the video.

Telephone - Lady Gaga (feat. Beyonce)

We Made You - Eminem

Music Video Styles

All music videos come under at least one three categories: Narrative Based, Performance Based or Concept. Sometimes some music videos will come under more than one category.

Narrative Based
A narrative based music video is when the story is related to the lyrics. An example of this would be 'Teenage Dirtbag' by Wheatus. In the video, it is about a boy who is a bit of loser in his school and falls for the popular girl in school. In the end he eventually gets the girl at prom night. Another example of this would be 'Stan' by Eminem feat. Dido. This is quite a famous music video. In this video it is about a guy who is a massive fan of Eminem and keeps writing to him but gets no replies. He has a breakdown with his girlfriend and goes for a drive and eventually drives off the edge of a bridge. Most of Eminem's music videos are narrative based.

Performance Based
A performance based music video is just when the artist is videoed performing their song with no story or other videos. The performance is often in an non - musical environment. An example this would be 'Can't tell me Nothing' by Kanye West. The video is just him performing his song in a desert (non - musical environment), not much happens in the video and is quite boring. Another example would be 'Undercover Martyn' by Two Door Cinema Club. There seems to be a little bit more going on in the background on this video but really they are just performing their song to the viewer.

Concept Based

A concept based music video is when the video has no relation to the lyrics. These are usually the best music videos. An example of this would be 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' by Fredde Le Grand. In this video it is a lot of good looking nurses dancing around a lot of unresponsive clones of one guy and they try to wake them up. Another example would be 'Fluorescent Adolescence' by The Arctic Monkeys. The song is about a boy and a girls past relationship but the song is about a bunch of people dressed up as clowns fighting with a gang. Despite the video having nothing to do with the video it is still an enjoyable watch.

Purposes of Music Videos

The main purpose for music videos is to promote an artist so that they become more successful and make more money. It also helps sell their music. In the 70's and 80's British artist were the only ones that were making music videos. This caused a massive 'brit invasion' in the American charts. The Beatles kicked off the music video industry which was a big reason for their huge success. They created the first music video when they did a video for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. A music video could also promote an artist. This could be done by making a controversial or crazy video. Lady Gaga's 'Judas' music video is an example, the video had a lot of complaints about blasphemy in video. This got the public talking about the video which meant they would go and check it out. A totally opposite example would be Psy's 'Gangnam Style'. This video kicked off one of the worlds most well known dance crazes and now has over 450 million views. The band Gorillaz pushed the boundaries a bit further because in all their music videos they have made cartoon version of themselves which gave them promotion as word of mouth kicked in and people went to watch their videos and buying their music. The creation of music videos caused the make of new TV channels such as MTV and VH1 which specialise in showing music videos all day. However the popularity in music videos caused the demise of programmes such as Top of the Pops due to the invention of YouTube where music videos is the main interest on YouTube. The most watched music video on YouTube is Justin Bieber's 'Baby' with an impressive 786,574,162* views followed by Jennifer Lopez's 'Get on the Floor' featuring Pitbull with 605,643,753* views. Music videos can also promote films, this is called synergy. Most recently Adele released a song called 'Skyfall' to promote the new James Bond. They could also promote an certain brand or product. A song could be used in an advert, a popular example is a the Superbowl halftime commercials. Also because of the huge viewing figures a song from a memorable advert would often go to number 1 in the charts that next week.
